How to Measure Your Horse for a Blanket: A Simple Sizing Guide
Share
Buying a horse blanket that actually fits is the difference between a cozy, comfortable horse and one dealing with rubbed shoulders, slipping straps, and cold spots. The good news: you only need a soft measuring tape and a couple of minutes. Here is exactly how ranchers across the I-35 corridor size their horses right the first time.
What You'll Need
- A flexible cloth or vinyl measuring tape (the kind used for sewing)
- A helper to hold your horse square and calm
- A halter and lead rope
No cloth tape? Run a piece of baling twine along the horse, mark it, then measure the twine against a regular tape measure.
The One Measurement That Matters
Horse blankets are sized by the length of the horse's body — not by height or weight. Stand your horse square on flat ground and measure from the center of the chest (where the neck meets the chest), straight across the point of the shoulder, along the barrel, to the middle of the tail where the hindquarters end.
Keep the tape level and snug against the body. Whatever number you land on — say 74 inches — is your blanket size. Most U.S. blankets are sold in 3-inch increments (72", 75", 78"), so round up to the nearest size.
Quick Size Reference
- Small ponies: 48"–60"
- Large ponies / small horses: 63"–69"
- Average horses (Quarter Horses, Paints): 72"–78"
- Warmbloods and larger: 78"–84"+
When Your Horse Is Between Sizes
Always size up. A blanket that runs slightly long is far more comfortable than one that pulls tight across the chest and shoulders. Tight blankets rub out mane and hair and leave sore spots right where the straps sit.
Check the Fit After It Arrives
Once the blanket is on, you should be able to slide a flat hand between the blanket and the horse's shoulder. The tail flap should reach the top of the tail, and the belly surcingles should clear about a hand's width from the belly. If the neck opening gaps or the chest straps strain, the size is off.
