New Horse Owner Starter Checklist: The Essentials for Your First Horse
Share
Bringing home your first horse is a big day — and a long shopping list. If you're setting up in Texas or Oklahoma, here's the practical starter checklist we'd hand a new owner: the gear you actually need on day one, not the stuff you can add later.
Shelter & blanketing
- A medium-weight turnout blanket (200g) for cold, wet days — the everyday piece for our climate.
- A stable sheet for mild days and keeping your horse clean.
Grooming basics
- A curry, a stiff and soft brush, a hoof pick, and a mane-and-tail brush.
- A coat conditioner or finishing oil for show days and dry Texas coats.
First aid & health
- A basic equine first-aid kit — wound spray, vet wrap, and the essentials for the small stuff that always happens.
- Fly protection for the season (a fly sheet at minimum).
Tack you'll reach for first
- A well-fitted saddle pad — the one piece of tack that protects both your horse's back and your saddle.
- A halter and lead you trust.
